"Ecuador Blue" is a cultivar or clone of Echinopsis Pachanoi, which is sometimes also classified under Trichocereus Pachanoi or Trichocereus Macrogonus var. Pachanoi. The taxonomy of Echinopsis and Trichocereus is complex and has undergone revisions, with many former Trichocereus species now being absorbed into Echinopsis.
Blue Hue: The most distinguishing feature of "Ecuador Blue" is its striking glaucous blue tint, which can be quite pronounced, especially in good light. This "blueness" can vary depending on environmental conditions.
Form: Like other Echinopsis Pachanoi, it is a columnar, multi-stemmed cactus that can grow quite tall in its native habitat (up to 6 feet or more). It branches from the base, creating a candelabra effect.
Spines: Spines are generally relatively short and thin, though their number and length can vary and be influenced by environmental factors.
Flowers: Mature Echinopsis Pachanoi plants produce large, fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers, typically blooming at night during spring or summer. It can take several years for a plant to flower for the first time.
Origin: As the name suggests, this particular lineage or clone is associated with Ecuador, often from specific regions like Zhuracpamba in southern Ecuador.
Cultivation:
Light: "Ecuador Blue" cacti prefer full sun (6-8 hours daily) but can tolerate partial shade, especially in very hot climates. If growing indoors, a south-facing window is ideal. Acclimate the plant slowly to bright light to prevent sunburn.
Soil: Excellent drainage is crucial to prevent root rot. Use a well-draining, organic cactus mix. A good mix often includes pumice, orchid bark, and cactus soil. Avoid heavy or mucky soils. Do not use pebbles at the bottom of the pot, as this can hinder drainage.
Watering:
Growing Season (Spring/Summer): Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. They are more forgiving of plentiful water during hot weather if drainage is good.
Dormant Season (Fall/Winter): Reduce watering significantly. The plant requires minimal moisture during colder months. If kept indoors in a warmer environment, a small amount of water mid-winter on a bright day might be beneficial to prevent shriveling.
Avoid overwatering at all costs, as this is the most common cause of root rot.
Temperature: These cacti are relatively hardy for a cactus, generally tolerating temperatures down to about 20°F (-9°C) in USDA zones 8b-10, especially if kept dry. In cooler climates, it's best to grow them in pots so they can be brought indoors during winter.
Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize once a month with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer or a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
Repotting: Repot young plants every 2-3 years, and mature plants every 4-5 years or when they become root-bound. Use a pot slightly larger than the current one with drainage holes.
Propagation: "Ecuador Blue" (like other Echinopsis Pachanoi) is easily propagated from cuttings. Allow the cut surface to callous for several days before planting in well-draining soil. They can also be grown from seed, but this is a much slower process.
Pests and Diseases: Watch for common cactus pests like mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Root rot is the primary disease concern, caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
Growth Rate:
Echinopsis Pachanoi is considered a fast-growing cactus, especially when provided with optimal conditions (plenty of sun, proper watering, and good drainage).
Growth rates can vary significantly depending on factors like soil type, sunlight, temperature, and overall care.
In summary, "Ecuador Blue" refers to a visually appealing, blue-hued variety of the San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis Pachanoi) that originates from Ecuador. It's a relatively easy-to-grow columnar cactus, valued for its striking color and impressive size when mature, and it thrives with proper drainage and ample sunlight.
