'Melted Wax' is a fascinating cultivar known for its unique and irregular growth habit. Here's a breakdown of what makes it special:
Identity and Characteristics:
Parent Species: It is a Monstrose form of Trichocereus Bridgesii (also known as Echinopsis lageniformis), commonly referred to as the "Monstrose Bolivian Torch."
Monstrose Growth: The "melted wax" appearance stems from a genetic mutation that causes the plant to grow in irregular, often undulating or flowing shapes, resembling melted candle wax. This is due to the apical meristem (growing tip) becoming divided, scattering growth points randomly rather than growing normally from a single tip.
Appearance: It tends to be a lighter green to blue-green color compared to other Trichocereus Bridgesii forms. While the typical monstrose forms like 'Short-Stem' and 'Long-Stem' ('Penis Cactus') have distinct, often spineless segments, 'Melted Wax' exhibits more continuous and contorted growth along its stems, often showing more typical monstrose growth towards its tips.
Spines: Trichocereus Bridgesii in general can be quite spiky with irregular spine formations. While some forms of 'Melted Wax' may have fewer spines, they can still be present, sometimes at random angles.
Size: As a columnar cactus, Trichocereus Bridgesii can grow quite tall, but the monstrose forms like 'Melted Wax' tend to be slower growing.
Cultivation and Care:
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can be beneficial. It needs at least 4-5 hours of direct sun per day to flower.
Watering: Like most cacti, it requires well-draining soil and is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water regularly during the growing season (spring to autumn), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce or stop watering during the winter dormancy.
Soil: Good drainage is essential. A mix of about 70% inorganic material (like perlite or pumice) and 30% organic material is often recommended, especially in cooler, wetter climates like the UK, to ensure quick drainage.
Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 8 and above, tolerating temperatures down to near 20°F (-9°C). Protection from prolonged frost is crucial.
Fertilization: Fertilize two to three times a year during the growing season with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer or a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Cuttings should be allowed to callus (dry and form a scab) for several days to weeks before planting to prevent rot.
Pests and Diseases: Trichocereus Bridgesii are generally more prone to fungal issues. Good airflow, well-draining soil, and occasional preventative fungicide treatments can help. Watch out for common pests like mealybugs, scale, and snails.
History and Significance:
Trichocereus Bridgesii is native to Bolivia (specifically the La Paz valley) and Argentina.
Like other Trichocereus species (such as T. Pachanoi or San Pedro cactus, and T. Peruvianus or Peruvian Torch cactus), T. Bridgesii has a long history of traditional use by indigenous populations in the Andes for medicinal and ceremonial purposes. These uses are linked to the presence of psychoactive alkaloids, notably mescaline.
The 'Melted Wax' cultivar is a popular collector's item due to its highly unusual and aesthetically appealing growth form. Mutations leading to monstrose and crested growth are common in Trichocereus Bridgesii, and 'Melted Wax' is a distinct genetic line within these mutant forms.
In essence, 'Melted Wax' is a captivating example of a monstrose cactus, prized by enthusiasts for its unique and ever-changing sculptural form. While it shares many care requirements with its parent species, its distinctive growth habit makes it a standout in any cactus collection.
