"Cactus CV. Sheridan" primarily refers to a specific clone of Trichocereus pachanoi, often simply called "Sheridan." It's a popular cultivar, particularly known in the cactus community, especially among those interested in Trichocereus species.
Here's what's known about it:
Origin and Lineage:
"Sheridan" is a clone of Trichocereus pachanoi (also known as San Pedro cactus, or Echinopsis pachanoi).
It originates from Ross Gurau's garden in New Zealand. Ross Gurau is a well-known Trichocereus pachanoi grower.
The "Sheridan" clone is specifically noted for being a pure Trichocereus pachanoi genetic. When seeds are offered as "Sheridan x OP" (open pollinated), it means the mother plant is 'Sheridan', and the father plant is also a Trichocereus pachanoi, as only pachanoi plants were flowering in Ross Gurau's garden at the time of pollination.
Key Characteristics (as indicated by its use in crosses and general pachanoi characteristics):
Growth: It's described as a fast-growing columnar cactus.
Hardiness: Plants from this lineage are often noted as being hardy and able to withstand a lot of abuse, making them suitable for various climates, including the UK. Trichocereus pachanoi in general is known for its resilience and ability to handle temperatures as low as -9°C for short periods.
Appearance: While specific visual details for the 'Sheridan' clone itself aren't extensively described beyond its pachanoi nature, Trichocereus pachanoi typically has:
Light to dark green, sometimes glaucous stems.
Usually 6-8 ribs.
Whitish areoles that may produce up to seven yellow to brown spines, typically shorter in cultivated varieties and sometimes mostly spineless.
Flowers: Like other Trichocereus pachanoi, it produces large, fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers that open at night and last about two days. It can take 5-8 years for an adult plant to produce a flower.
Cultivation and Availability:
"Sheridan" is commonly propagated through cuttings and is also used as a parent plant for seeds, particularly "Sheridan x OP" seeds.
These seeds and seedlings are available from specialized cactus vendors.
The seeds from 'Sheridan' are reported to have a high germination rate and fast growth from seed.
In summary, "Sheridan" is a well-regarded Trichocereus pachanoi clone originating from New Zealand, prized for its vigorous growth and hardiness, making it a desirable plant for collectors and growers of San Pedro cacti.
