'Colossus x VRG' is a hybrid cultivar, meaning it's a cross between two different Trichocereus parent plants: 'Colossus' and 'VRG' (which stands for Vari Red Grandiflorus). These types of crosses are often done by specialized breeders like Misplant, who carefully hand-pollinate and track the parentage to create new and interesting varieties.

Here's a breakdown of what's known about this specific hybrid:

Parent Plants:

'Colossus': This is a notable Trichocereus clone often described as having a "girthy" or robust appearance, with impressive spines, particularly on older growth. It's sometimes associated with a plant that grew at the Berkeley Botanical Gardens, though its exact origin and classification have been subjects of discussion among enthusiasts. Some suggest it might be a spontaneous hybrid or closely related to Trichocereus Riomizquensis or even Trichocereus Scopulicola.

'VRG' (Vari Red Grandiflorus): This parent contributes "vari" (variegated) genetics and traits from Trichocereus Grandiflorus. This means that offspring from 'VRG' crosses have an increased chance of exhibiting variegation (patches of different colors on the stem due to a lack of chlorophyll) and may produce different colored flower blooms, moving beyond the typical white flowers often seen in Trichocereus.

Characteristics of 'Colossus x VRG' Hybrid:

Hybrid Variability: As with any hybrid, seedlings from 'Colossus x VRG' can exhibit a range of traits inherited from both parents. This means individual plants might look different from one another, showcasing unique features.

Potential for Variegation: Due to the 'VRG' parentage, there's a good chance that some seedlings from this cross will display variegation, which is highly sought after by collectors.

Growth and Appearance: While specific details for this exact cross can vary, 'Colossus' is known for its robust, columnar form, and 'VRG' can contribute to interesting color variations. Generally, Trichocereus species are columnar in shape and can grow quite large.

Spine Characteristics: Given the 'Colossus' parent, some offspring might develop significant spines, especially as they mature.

Cultivation:

Like most Trichocereus species and their hybrids, 'Colossus x VRG' generally thrives under conditions similar to its parent plants:

Sunlight: They prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in extremely hot climates. If grown indoors, a south or west-facing window is ideal.

Soil: Good drainage is crucial. A well-draining cactus mix consisting of non-organic materials like clay, pumice, lava grit, and a small amount of peat or leaf-mould is recommended. Repotting every couple of years can provide fresh soil.

Watering: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between watering's. Reduce watering significantly in fall and winter, keeping the soil rather dry. Avoid overhead watering in cold or humid conditions to prevent rot.

Fertilization: Feed with a high potassium fertilizer during the summer growing season.

Frost Tolerance: They require light frost protection, though established plants may tolerate some colder temperatures if kept dry. A cool rest period in winter is beneficial for abundant flowering.

Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common cactus pests like mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites.

Propagation: Easily propagated from cuttings. Cuttings should be allowed to callus over for a week or more before being placed in a well-draining potting mix.

Where to Find:

Seeds and sometimes cuttings of 'Colossus x VRG' are primarily available from specialized Trichocereus breeders and sellers, with Misplant being a known source for these types of crosses. Due to their hybrid nature and desirable traits (especially variegation), they can be popular among cactus collectors

Appearance:
Color: Glaucous blue-gray.
Texture: Described as having a "sandpaper texture."
Spines: Older growth can have a single long central spine (around two inches).
Form: Typically columnar.
Size: As the name suggests, it's known for its robust size and ability to produce "truly colossal flowers."
Identification: There can be some debate about whether it's a Pachanoi or another Trichocereus species, highlighting the complexities in Trichocereus taxonomy.

"VRG" (Variegated Red Grandiflorus):

This likely refers to a Trichocereus variety known for its "Vari Red" characteristics, possibly hinting at reddish spines or a reddish tint to the epidermis, and perhaps a "Grandi" (Grandiflorus) influence which can contribute to large, showy flowers. VAL VRG is a seed grown Misplant hybrid, a unique cross of Validus and Variegated Red Grandiflorus. This heavily variegated plant produced several flowers in 2023. Often used for creating wonderful variegated hybrids.
