Trichocereus Grandiflorus (now often Echinopsis huascha var. grandiflora or related hybrids):
Identity: This is perhaps the most common association with "Grandiflora" in the columnar cactus context. It was formerly known as Trichocereus Grandiflorus, but its taxonomic classification has shifted and is often now placed under Echinopsis huascha var. grandiflora. It's also frequently referred to as the "Red Torch Cactus" or "Desert Blooming Jewel."
Origin: Native to Argentina (e.g., Catamarca, La Rioja), found in rugged, extreme environments.
Appearance: This is a basally branching columnar cactus, typically growing 6 inches to 3 feet tall (15-90 cm). Stems are globose to short-cylindrical, about 4 inches in diameter, with 12-18 ribs. Spines are needle-like, yellowish to brownish, usually short (around 1 cm long), especially compared to the standard Echinopsis huascha.
Flowers: Its most striking feature. It produces glorious, funnel-shaped flowers, 4 inches long, often in crimson red, but also yellow, orange, or pink. These are diurnal (open during the day). They bloom in spring, often in a magnificent display.
Hardiness: It's quite hardy, tolerating temperatures down to about 19°F (-7°C) for short periods if kept dry in winter. It prefers full sun but can be prone to scorching in the hottest direct sun and may benefit from light shade in extreme heat.
Hybrids: This species has been extensively hybridized with other Echinopsis species (creating "Trichopsis" hybrids) to produce a vast array of flower colors, including yellow, rose, crimson, orange, violet, white, and even bicolors. These hybrids are known for their "sheer flower power" and can produce hundreds of blooms on mature plants.
Growth Rate: Generally considered a relatively fast-growing columnar cactus.
