JS47"V" is a stunner of a Pachanoi I obtained from Jeremy (Prickocereus) His description is as follows: JS got the seed back in 2001 and is one of his favorites.

Trichocereus JS47 variegated is a highly sought-after and visually striking cactus clone. Here's a breakdown of what makes it special and how to care for it:

Origin and Characteristics:

JS47 is a specific clone of Trichocereus pachanoi (often known as San Pedro cactus). It originated from a seed-grown Trichocereus pachanoi around 2001.

Variegation means that the cactus displays patches of different colors, typically creamy white, yellow, or even pink, contrasting with the usual green body. This is due to a lack of chlorophyll in certain areas of the plant tissue.

The variegation on JS47 is a "sport," meaning it appeared as a spontaneous genetic mutation on the original JS47 clone. Propagating this variegated growth is how the "JS47 variegated" clone came to be.

It's considered a "shape shifter" as its appearance can vary significantly depending on the local environment and growing conditions.

Like other Trichocereus pachanoi, it has a columnar growth habit, with typically 6-8 ribs and white areoles that may produce short, yellow to brown spines. It can produce large, fragrant white flowers that open at night during the warmer months.

Why it's Popular:

Aesthetic Appeal: The unique and vibrant variegation makes it a highly desirable ornamental cactus for collectors.

Rarity: Variegated cacti, especially stable clones like JS47 variegated, tend to be less common and thus more valuable.

Care Instructions for Variegated Trichocereus (General Principles):

Variegated cacti, including JS47 variegated, require similar care to their non-variegated counterparts, but with a bit more attention to certain aspects:

Light:

Bright, indirect sunlight is ideal. While Trichocereus generally prefer full sun, the variegated portions are more sensitive to direct, intense sunlight and can easily scorch or burn, leading to discoloration or damage.

If growing indoors, place it near a south or west-facing window.

For outdoor growth, provide some afternoon shade, especially in hot climates.

Strong light helps maintain vibrant variegation. If variegation fades and turns greener, it might need more light (but avoid scorching).

Soil:

Excellent drainage is crucial. Use a well-draining cactus mix, often a blend of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite. You can also add pumice or grit for better aeration.

Containers should have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Watering:

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for cacti, especially variegated ones which can be more prone to rot due to their weaker variegated sections.

During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently (once the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry).

Reduce watering significantly in fall and winter when the cactus is dormant (once a month or even less).

Temperature:

Trichocereus generally thrive in warm conditions, ideally between 18−30

 C (65−86

 F).

Protect from frost and cold drafts, as they are not frost-hardy. They can tolerate cooler temperatures down to around 5

 C (41

 F) if kept dry, but it's best to avoid extended cold exposure.

Humidity:

Low humidity is best for these cacti.

Propagation:

JS47 variegated is typically propagated through cuttings to ensure the variegated traits are passed on.

Allow cuttings to callous for several days in a dry, clean location before planting them in well-draining soil.

Grafting is also a common method for highly variegated or weaker sections, as it can provide a stronger rootstock and enhance growth.

Important Considerations:

Fragility: Variegated cacti can sometimes be more delicate than their all-green counterparts because the non-chlorophyll parts are less efficient at photosynthesis. This can make them more susceptible to rot if overwatered.

Genetic Stability: While JS47 variegated is a recognized clone, the degree and pattern of variegation can sometimes vary, and in rare cases, a variegated plant might "revert" back to all-green growth.

Pest and Disease: Like all cacti, they can be susceptible to pests (like spider mites or mealybugs) and fungal diseases (especially from overwatering). Regular inspection is recommended.

In summary, Trichocereus JS47 variegated is a stunning and unique cactus that requires bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and careful watering to thrive and showcase its beautiful, multicolored patterns.
