Adromischus Herrei (often classified as Adromischus marianiae f. Herrei) is a rare, slow-growing succulent native to the granite rock crevices of Little Namaqualand, South Africa. It is highly prized by collectors for its unusual, "otherworldly" appearance, featuring textured, warty leaves that often resemble dried raisins, pebbles, or coral. Physical Characteristics
-
Leaves: Fleshy, nearly spherical to elongated (raindrop or lemon-shaped), reaching 1.5–3.5 cm long. They are covered in irregular bumps and ridges.
-
Color: Highly variable depending on sunlight and clone; colors range from apple green to reddish-brown, purple, or almost black.
-
Size: A dwarf subshrub that remains compact, typically reaching only 4 inches (10 cm) in height.
-
Flowers: Produces small, non-showy green flowers with pinkish-red tinged petals on slender stalks up to 12 inches tall in late summer to fall.
Care and Cultivation
This plant is considered somewhat difficult to cultivate because it is highly sensitive to moisture.
-
Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight to maintain its vibrant colors and compact shape. However, it should be protected from harsh midday sun to prevent sunburn.
-
Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method; only water when the soil is completely dry. It is extremely prone to rot if overwatered, especially during its summer and winter dormancy.
-
Soil: Needs a mineral-heavy, gritty mix (50–70% pumice, perlite, or sand) with very little organic matter.
-
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 50–77°F (10–25°C). While it can survive short periods down to 20°F (-7°C) if kept dry, it is generally best kept above 40°F (5°C).
-
Propagation: Primarily propagated through leaf cuttings. Single leaves can be twisted off and placed on well-draining soil; they take several weeks to root and produce new growth.
