Aloe marlothii (Mountain Aloe)
Aloe marlothii (Mountain Aloe) - 4" is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
Aloe marlothii (Mountain Aloe) brings bold structure to xeriscapes and drought-tolerant gardens. This single-stemmed succulent forms a dense rosette of fleshy grey-green leaves with reddish-brown spines along the margins and often across the leaf surfaces. Mature leaves can reach up to 5 feet long, creating a dramatic architectural focal point.
As Mountain Aloe matures, it develops a tall trunk surrounded by a skirt of persistent dried leaves. In winter, mature plants produce branched, candelabra-like flower stalks with horizontal or slightly angled spikes of orange, red, or yellow tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees.
Origin and habitat
Native to South Africa, including KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and Gauteng, with its range extending into Eswatini, Botswana, and Mozambique. Aloe marlothii grows in rocky hills, open flatlands, and bushveld.
Available options
Choose from 4-inch, 6-inch, 1 Gallon, 3 Gallon, 5 Gallon, and Custom Pot options. Select your preferred option above for current pricing and availability.
Mountain Aloe care
- Light: Full sun supports its blue-grey coloration and robust spines. It tolerates partial shade but may grow less compactly.
- Water: Drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply but infrequently, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter to help prevent root rot.
- Soil: Use porous, well-draining cactus and succulent soil. Pumice or coarse sand can help improve drainage.
- Cold protection: Listed cold tolerance is approximately 20°F (-6°C). Protect during hard freezes rather than relying on this temperature as a guarantee.
- Companion plants: Pair with Agave, Portulacaria afra, or flowering Echinopsis for contrasting textures and seasonal color.
