The cactus in the image is an Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as the Bishop's Cap Cactus, Bishop's Hat, or Bishop's Miter Cactus. The name "Astrophytum" translates to "star plant" due to its distinctive star-like shape, which is defined by a number of prominent vertical ribs, usually five, as seen in your photo. .
General Information and Care
- Appearance: The plant is spineless and has a globose (rounded) to cylindrical stem. Its surface is covered with a whitish, felt-like flocking of trichomes, which can vary between horticultural varieties.
- Native to: The highlands of northeastern and central Mexico.
- Growth: It is a slow-growing species, which adds more ribs and becomes more cylindrical as it ages.
- Flowers: Mature plants can produce fragrant, creamy yellow, or golden flowers near the apex, typically in the spring or summer, after about six years of growth.
- Light: It thrives in bright sunlight, needing about six to eight hours of direct sun per day.
- Watering: It is important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings, as it is susceptible to root rot. Water sparingly in the summer and keep it dry in the winter during its dormancy period.
- Soil: Use a very gritty, fast-draining, mineral-based soil mix.
