Elevate your rare plant collection with the extraordinary Astrophytum myriostigma 'Fukuryu'. Originating from elite Japanese breeding lines, the "Lucky Dragon" is a living geometric sculpture prized for its unique, multi-layered secondary ribs and warted protrusions that emerge between its classic star-shaped facets. This spineless, slow-growing collector cactus thrives in gritty, fast-draining soil and bright light, producing delicate, satiny-yellow blooms at the crown throughout summer. A centerpiece specimen for succulent connoisseurs and design enthusiasts alike.

Plant Care Guide

Light

Bright, direct sunlight to light filtered shade. Provide 4–6+ hours of strong light daily. In exceptionally hot climates, provide light afternoon shade to avoid epidermis scorching (especially on nudum forms).

Watering

Follow the "soak and dry" method during the growing season (March through October). Allow the potting medium to dry out completely before watering thoroughly.

  • Winter Rest: Keep completely dry from November through February to avoid root rot.

Soil & Substrate

Requires an ultra-fast-draining, mineral-dominant mix (80–90% grit) composed of pumice, lava rock, coarse sand, perlite, and a small pinch of limestone/cactus soil with minimal organic matter.

Temperature & Hardiness

  • Optimal: 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C).
  • Hardiness: USDA Zones 9–11. Can tolerate brief cold drops if kept bone dry, but should ideally be protected from temperatures below 40°F–45°F (5°C–7°C).

Feeding

Feed sparingly during late spring and early summer using a low-nitrogen, diluted cactus fertilizer.
