Overview of Edithcolea Grandis
Known as the Persian Carpet Flower, this rare, leafless succulent is the only species in its genus. It is famous for its large, star-shaped blooms that feature intricate patterns resembling a woven rug.
Key Characteristics
- Stems: Richly branched, decumbent (sprawling) stems that can grow up to 12 inches long. They are armed with sharp, spine-like teeth or tubercles.
- Flowers: Vibrant yellow, maroon, and purple patterns. They can reach up to 5 inches (12 cm) in diameter and emit a carrion-like odor to attract fly pollinators.
- Hardiness: Extremely sensitive to cold; it requires winter temperatures above 60°F (15°C) and thrives in USDA zones 10b–11b.
- Care: Requires bright, indirect light and gritty, well-draining soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry to prevent root rot.
