The Gerrardanthus macrorhizus, famously known as the Bigfoot plant, is an extraordinary addition to any succulent collection. This South African native is prized for its massive, bulbous caudex that resembles a prehistoric stone, from which delicate, ivy-shaped vines scramble toward the light. A perfect conversation piece, "Bigfoot" is surprisingly resilient and easy to grow if given bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Whether you're a seasoned caudiciform enthusiast or a beginner looking for something truly unique, this slow-growing climber offers a stunning architectural silhouette that only gets more impressive with age.

About Gerrardanthus macrorhizus
  • Origin: Native to southern Africa, including South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique.
  • Key Features: It is characterized by its large, swollen, pumpkin-like caudex (water storage organ) that grows above ground and can eventually reach up to 40 inches in diameter. From this base, thin, ivy-like green vines emerge that can climb or trail over 15 feet.
  • Flowers: It is a dioecious species, meaning separate plants produce either male or female flowers. Flowers are small, orchid-like, and typically a dark brownish-yellow or orange.
  • Care Requirements:
    • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While the vines enjoy sun, the caudex should ideally remain shaded to prevent sunburn.
    • Water: Needs regular watering during the active summer growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between sessions.
    • Soil: Requires exceptionally well-draining, gritty soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
    • Dormancy: The plant typically goes dormant in winter, shedding its leaves. Watering should be significantly reduced during this time.
