JS 47 is a specific cultivar of Trichocereus, a genus of columnar cacti, most famously known for the San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus Pachanoi, also classified as Echinopsis Pachanoi or Trichocereus Macrogonus var. Pachanoi).
Here's what is known about 'JS 47':
Origin: It came into cultivation labeled as a "seed-grown Trichocereus Pachanoi" around 2001. The "JS" in its name likely refers to a collector or breeder, with "JS numbers" being a common way to track specific clones or lineages within the Trichocereus community.
Characteristics:
Appearance: It's described as a "shape-shifter," meaning its appearance can vary significantly depending on its growing environment.
Growth: It's considered a fast-growing columnar cactus. Like other Trichocereus, it typically has tall, green stems with vertical ribs and variable spines.
Variegation: Notably, a variegated sport (a portion of the plant with a different genetic mutation, often seen as color variations) appeared on a mother plant of JS 47 a few years ago. This variegated form has since been propagated.
Flowers: While specific details for JS 47's flowers aren't widely detailed, Trichocereus generally produce large, white, fragrant flowers that open at night and last for about two days.
Cultivation:
Light: Like most Trichocereus, JS 47 prefers full sun to partial shade, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth. If grown indoors, a bright, south or west-facing window or supplemental grow lights are recommended to prevent etiolation (stretching due to insufficient light).
Soil: It requires well-draining soil. A good mix typically includes inorganic materials like pumice, perlite, or coarse sand mixed with some organic components (e.g., potting soil or compost). Containers should have good drainage.
Watering: Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In colder months or during dormancy, watering should be significantly reduced or stopped entirely to prevent root rot, especially if temperatures drop.
Temperature: Trichocereus Pachanoi is surprisingly hardy for a cactus, able to tolerate temperatures as low as -9.4 °C (15 °F) to 10 °C (50 °F), and even brief periods of frost down to -11 °C (12 °F) if kept dry. However, it thrives in warm, dry climates. Good airflow is also important.
Propagation: Like other Trichocereus, JS 47 can be propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. Cuttings should be allowed to callus for a few days before planting to prevent rot.
Pests and Diseases: While relatively hardy, they can be susceptible to fungal diseases if overwatered. Common pests include mealybugs and scale, which can be treated with rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap.
In essence, JS 47 is a favored cultivar within the Trichocereus community, particularly for its ability to produce variegated forms and its generally robust nature, typical of San Pedro cactus varieties.
