About the Crested Hatchet Cactus
A crested form occurs as an abnormal growth mutation where the plant's growing point (meristem) develops linearly instead of in a single point, causing the stem to flatten out and grow in a wavy, fan shape that resembles a brain. This unique form is highly sought after by succulent collectors.
- Distinctive Features: It is a spineless cactus, but it has distinct, scale-like tubercles covered in fine, pectinated spines (comb-like) that resemble a woodlouse.
- Origin: The species is native to San Luis Potosí, Mexico, growing in grit and limestone rocks, often under the shade of bushes.
- Growth Rate: This plant is known for its extremely slow growth rate, especially the crested form, making mature specimens rare and more valuable. Due to rooting difficulties and slow growth, it is often sold as a grafted plant.
- Flowers: It produces attractive pink to purplish flowers from the apex during its blooming season in the spring.
