Pilosocereus azureus, the Blue Torch Cactus, is one of the most visually striking columnar cacti in cultivation. Native to the rocky, arid regions of Brazil, it is celebrated for its radiant, powdery blue-turquoise skin — one of the most intense natural blue tones found in the plant kingdom — set against contrasting golden-yellow spines and tufts of white woolly hair at the areoles.
Fast-growing for a columnar cactus, it adds a dramatic architectural accent to modern xeriscapes, bright patios, and large container displays. Available in 1-gallon, 3-gallon, 5-gallon, and 15-gallon sizes.
Care Guide
- Light: Full sun; 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain the intense blue coloration.
- Water: Soak and dry — allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Very drought-tolerant once established.
- Soil: Fast-draining mineral cactus mix.
- Temperature: USDA Zones 9–11; protect from frost below 30°F.
- Growth: Can reach 20+ feet at maturity; sizes up quickly with warmth and full sun.
