'Pumacayan' is a specific cultivar (CV stands for Cultivar) within the Trichocereus genus, which is now generally classified under Echinopsis. It is commonly associated with the San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus Pachanoi or Echinopsis Pachanoi).

Here's a breakdown of what's known about it:

Origin and Background:

'Pumacayan' is understood to be a seed-grown cultivar, often originating from seed collections, such as those from Chavin Herbalists. This means it's not a direct clone of a single wild plant but rather a distinct genetic line developed from seeds.

The Trichocereus genus itself is native to the Andes Mountains of South America, including Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. These cacti are accustomed to high altitudes and varying rainfall.

Characteristics:

As a Trichocereus (specifically a type of San Pedro), 'Pumacayan' would generally exhibit the characteristics of a fast-growing, columnar cactus.

Stem: Light to dark green, possibly with a glaucous (bluish-white, powdery) coating when young. They typically have 6-8 ribs.

Spines: While Trichocereus Pachanoi can have variable spines, cultivated varieties often have shorter spines or can be mostly spineless.

Flowers: Like most Trichocereus, 'Pumacayan' would likely produce large, fragrant, white flowers that typically open at night and last for about two days.

Growth: Trichocereus Pachanoi can grow significantly, up to 30 cm per year once established, and mature plants can reach several meters in height. They tend to branch from the base.

Distinctive Features (for 'Pumacayan' specifically): Some enthusiasts note 'Pumacayan' for having particularly deep notching above the areoles, giving it a distinctive appearance.

Care Requirements:

Light: Trichocereus cacti thrive in ample sunlight. They prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in very hot climates. If growing indoors, a south or west-facing window is ideal.

Soil: Crucially, they need well-draining soil. A good mix typically includes inorganic lightweight substrates like pumice, perlite, or coarse sand, combined with organic material (e.g., standard potting soil, compost, or worm castings). Poor drainage can lead to root rot.

Watering:

Growing Season (Spring/Summer): Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. They can tolerate more water than many other cacti due to their natural habitat.

Dormant Season (Fall/Winter): Reduce watering significantly or stop entirely. The cactus enters a dormant phase and is susceptible to root rot if kept wet in cold conditions.

Temperature: Trichocereus Pachanoi is surprisingly cold-hardy for a cactus, able to withstand temperatures as low as -9°C (20°F) for short periods, provided they are kept dry. In colder climates, it's best to bring potted plants indoors during frost.

Fertilization: During the active growing season (April to October), fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer, or a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during the winter dormancy.

Repotting: Young plants may need repotting every 2-3 years, and mature plants every 4-5 years, or when they outgrow their pots.

Propagation: Like other Trichocereus, 'Pumacayan' can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. Cuttings are a popular method for preserving desirable traits of a specific cultivar.

General Notes:

The common name "San Pedro cactus" often refers to Trichocereus Pachanoi and its close relatives.

While Trichocereus cacti are known for containing certain alkaloids, 'Pumacayan' is generally grown for its ornamental value.

It's important to remember that 'Pumacayan' is a specific cultivar, so while it shares general Trichocereus characteristics, it may have subtle visual or growth habit differences that make it distinct and prized among collectors.
