Rainbow Cactus – Echinocereus rigidissimus rubrispinus

The Rainbow Cactus (Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubrispinus) is a small, slow-growing, solitary columnar succulent renowned for its breathtaking banded appearance. Native to the rocky plains of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, it earns its common name from densely packed, comb-like spines that lie flat against its ribbed stem. As the cactus goes through seasonal growth cycles, these interlocking spines change color — generating alternating concentric rings of bright ruby pink, rose red, creamy yellow, and pale white up the column.

A showpiece for windowsills, rock gardens, and xeriscape displays. Compact, cold-tolerant, and virtually carefree once established. Available in 2–4" sizes.

Care Guide

• Light: Full sun; 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily to develop and maintain intense spine coloration.
• Water: Soak and dry — allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep dry in winter dormancy.
• Soil: Fast-draining mineral cactus mix with high grit content.
• Temperature: Hardy to around 10°F (USDA Zone 7+); one of the more cold-tolerant Echinocereus species.
• Growth: Slow and compact — typically reaches 6–10" tall over many years, offsetting slowly.
