The TBM Clone B – Short Form is a true conversation piece for any succulent enthusiast. This rare cactus clone is prized for its unconventional, smooth, and knobby appearance, growing in curious clusters of rounded segments rather than traditional ribbed columns. Because it is slow-growing and maintains a compact habit, it is an excellent choice for decorative container gardening or a bright windowsill. This hardy specimen is remarkably low-maintenance, thriving on neglect and requiring only occasional watering and plenty of light to maintain its distinctive form.

Origin and History

  • Early Records: While its exact wild origin is a mystery, Clone B has been in cultivation for decades. It was likely introduced into the hobby by legendary collectors Ed and Betty Gay in the 1960s.
  • Naming: The designations "Clone A" and "Clone B" were popularized by Sacred Succulents in their early catalogs to help collectors distinguish between the long and short growth forms. There are also two forms of Clone C.

Cultivation and Care

  • Growth Rate: Clone B is considered a fast grower compared to other monstrose cacti because it produces new segments so frequently.
  • Sensitivity: Like most T. bridgesii, it is highly susceptible to humidity spots (small black fungal lesions) if kept in damp or stagnant air. These are usually cosmetic and heal into gray scars.
  • Soil and Water: It thrives in a heavy inorganic mix (around 70% perlite, pumice, or gravel) to prevent root rot. Water only when the segments feel slightly soft or "deflated."
  • Light: Prefers full sun or very bright indirect light. Insufficient light will cause etiolation, where new pups grow thin and stretched.
