The Sausage Plant cactus (often cited as T. Peruvianus cv. 'Sausage') is an exceedingly rare and highly sought-after cactus clone. It is primarily known for its unique, segmented growth pattern that resembles a string of sausages.
Key Characteristics
- Growth Habit: Its name is derived from its tendency to terminate growth at the tip and then "pup" (produce new growth) directly from the old shoot, creating a stacked, sausage-like appearance.
- Appearance: Typically displays a striking blue-green skin color. A short-spined variety of T. Peruvianus (Peruvian Torch) or possibly a T. Pachanoi (San Pedro) hybrid.
- Origin: This cultivar originally emerged from South Australia, specifically appearing in notable Australian collections like the Fields collection.
- Rarity: Considered one of the most interesting and rare clones in cultivation among cactus collectors.
- History: An older Australian clone, often associated with the Fields collection or a collector named Gussy.
- Watering: Like its Matucana relatives, it is susceptible to rot if overwatered in winter. Water most of the year but keep dry during cold dormant periods.
