Brighten up your garden beds and patio containers with Sedum rubrotinctum, affectionately known as the Jelly Bean Plant or Pork and Beans. This delightful evergreen succulent features swirling clusters of glossy, bean-shaped leaves that start as a brilliant emerald green and flush into a striking cherry-red when kissed by direct sun. A natural hybrid of Sedum pachyphyllum and Sedum stahlii, it is uniquely adapted to thrive in arid climates, rock gardens, and container displays.
Reaching 6–8 inches tall, its cascading stems naturally trail over pot edges or root into the ground to create a colorful, drought-tolerant mat. In spring, clusters of tiny star-shaped yellow flowers bloom at the tips. Available in 4", 6", 1-gallon, 3-gallon, and 5-gallon sizes.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, direct sun; 4–6+ hours daily to develop and maintain the cherry-red coloration. Less sun = greener leaves.
- Water: Soak and dry — allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established.
- Soil: Fast-draining succulent or cactus mix.
- Temperature: USDA Zones 9–11; protect from hard frost. Excellent as an indoor windowsill plant in colder climates.
- Note: Leaves detach easily and will propagate readily on their own — a bonus for collectors who want to spread the plant.
